Vintage Siam Sterling Silver Nielloware Bell Earrings

These unique vintage earrings from Siam (now Thailand) feature a bell shape adorned with intricate nielloware designs. Nielloware is a traditional metalworking technique where a black mixture, usually of sulfur, copper, silver, and lead, is inlaid into etched designs on the metal surface. Each earring depicts figures from Thai mythology, including the Kinnaree, a mythical half-human, half-bird creature known for its grace and beauty. While small bells may be used decoratively, in traditional Siam culture, larger bells often hold significance in temples, used for calling to prayer or marking time. These earrings, likely from the mid-20th century when Siam silver jewelry gained popularity, measure 1 1/2" long.

Marked Siam Sterling.
